Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
IASTM, or Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, is a technique that uses specialized tools to break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions, improving mobility and reducing pain. By applying precise pressure along muscles and connective tissues, IASTM targets problem areas that often contribute to tightness and limited range of motion. This technique is especially beneficial for those with chronic pain, as it releases adhesions in the fascia, allowing muscles to move more freely and improving blood flow to promote healing.

Sometimes IASTM can be uncomfortable but to say it is painful is quite harsh. The area treated by IASTM is usually already symptomatic so we have to be careful when treating the area to ensure pain does not worsen. Most patients experience a “hurts so good” sensation when receiving IASTM.

Several key areas frequently benefit from IASTM in my practice, based on patients' specific needs and lifestyles. For example, I often apply IASTM to the upper neck and shoulder muscles to help alleviate tension and manage headaches effectively. For runners experiencing tightness in their lower limbs, particularly the calves, this technique has proven valuable in relieving muscle strain after extensive mileage. Additionally, IASTM is highly effective for addressing forearm tension in individuals who spend prolonged hours typing or performing repetitive hand movements, promoting relief and improved mobility.

IASTM is unique because it uses specialized instruments to target specific soft tissue restrictions and adhesions. Unlike traditional massage, which generally focuses on relaxing muscles, IASTM aims to address deeper issues like scar tissue, fascial tightness, and chronic muscle tension. The tools we use in IASTM allow for a more precise application, breaking down these restrictions and encouraging mobility in a way that supports recovery and functional improvement. This approach also helps stimulate the body’s natural healing response, promoting the formation of new, healthier tissue.
